Abstract
The availability of specific D-1 (SCH23390) and D-2 (spiperone) dopamine (DA) receptor antagonists make it now possible to directly test the involvement of D-1 and D-2 receptors on brain stimulation reward processes. One of the chief problems in studying the effects of neuroleptics on brain stimulation has been the difficulty in dissociating reduced reward from performance deficits (Atrens et al., 1983). Some of the problems in dissociating the effects of neuroleptics on reinforcement processes have been addressed by using different behavioural tasks to obtain intracranial stimulation (ICS), varying the amount of brain stimulation or by using different schedules of reinforcement (Wise, 1982; Liebman, 1983; Atrens, 1984).
