Abstract
Data from interviews with 70 unmarried adolescent females in a traditional Indian community are used to examine the impact of education upon their activities, ideals and general awareness. A novelfeature of the analysis is the inclusion of both schoolgoing and out-of-school youth. While education was linked to more modern attitudes and greater knowledge, considerable traditionalism prevailed even among the most educated adolescents. Comparisons with responses from a sample of 40 village boys to selected general knowledge questions demonstrated relative female ignorance. It is argued that the present rural school system is of limited relevance for female adolescents.
