Abstract

Work is the sector of life most productive of stress for middle-aged men in administrative and managerial occupations. Although marital problems and troubles with children can produce stress as intense as any stress produced at work, marriage and parenthood only infrequently give rise to stress at all. Administrative and managerial work, in contrast, foster stress so regularly that most men doing such work report at least one experience at work within the preceding month that led to persisting preoccupation and irritability, and many report at least one in the preceding year that resulted in difficulties in sleeping.
