Abstract

Part of networking technology today tries to bring back capabilities people used in timesharing environments. For example, Sun's Network File System (NFS) gives workstations the filesharing ability that people had in timesharing. Another example is the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) used for sending electronic mail between networked machines. However, these and other network services typically lack the same level of security that timesharing achieves. The reason is that network security is a difficult problem, and most of the time networking technology skips it for expediency. But beginning with release 4.0 of the Sun Operating System (SunOS), there will no longer be any excuse to bypass the network-security problem.
