Several authors have noted that the survival rate is higher when cardiac arrest occurs in an operating room or catheterization laboratory than when it occurs elsewhere within a hospital (2-5). For example, Jude, Kouwenhoven, and Knickerbocker (2) noted a 64% survival rate from 31 patients resuscitated in the operating room or recovery room, whereas only 9% of 87 patients survived cardiac resuscitation outside of these areas.Since the chief attribute of external cardiac massage is...References1.
