Abstract

Hardiness, the personality characteristic composed of control, commitment and challenge, has been viewed as an inherent health‐promoting factor. Although primarily investigated as a buffer between stress and illness, the concept has direct relevance to nursing practice. Through identification of those individuals who (a) do not feel that they can control or influence the events in their lives, (b) do not feel deeply involved in or committed to the activities in their lives, or (c) do not anticipate change as an exciting challenge to further development, nurses can implement stress‐reducing interventions to aid in preventing stress‐related illness.
