Abstract
The relationship between peripheral blood lymphocytes and endogenous plasma cortisol was studied in healthy adults and patients with adrenal insufficiency. Lymphocyte levels and plasma cortisol concentrations of healthy adults had circadian variations that were inversely related. The patients with adrenal insufficiency had low plasma cortisol levels and lacked significant lymphocyte circadian variations. Administration of replacement quantities of cortisol to these patients caused a dose-dependent lowering of lymphocyte levels. There were significant increases in numbers of lymphocytes in healthy adults during the day. The proportion of E-rosette-forming lymphocytes (E-RFL) to total lymphocytes did not vary significantly during the day. The data suggest that endogenous cortisol is an important factor in the regulation of lymphocyte numbers.
