Abstract
To be traditionally geographical for a moment, it is remarkable that people manage to live on the equator and in settlements located beyond 78°N and 55°S; in areas with population densities ranging from 17 000 people per square kilometre to those with only one person per 39 square kilometres; in conditions of torrential rain and in burning aridity; on the coast and as far as 2250 kilometres from the sea; below sea-level and at 5100 metres above the sea; and that they live on stable platforms and perch, more or less neurotically, upon unstable fault lines.
