Abstract
Rats with bilateral nigral, caudoputamenal, or midbrain reticular formation lesions display impairment in learning position reversal problems in a simple T maze. Test trials given after learning each reversal problem disclose defective retention only in the nigral and caudoputamenal groups. This pattern of deficits associated with nigro-neostriatal damage is similar to that reported earlier in rats with bilateral lesions in the vicinity of the parafascicular nucleus. It is proposed that the nigral—parafascicular—neostriatal complex contributes to consolidation of spatial information in rodents.
