Abstract

Four types of forecasting techniques are listed under the two classes of exploratory and normative. They are extrapolative, speculative, explicative and correlative. These should not be considered as alternatives but rather as a sequence of steps, all of which are essential to a comprehensive forecast. This article advocates a restructuring of the better known techniques so that more attention might be paid to the speculative and correlative aspects of the subject.
