Bone marrow transplantation

Abstract

Bone marrow transplantation is a treatment option for humans with both hematological malignancies and aplastic anemia. Candidates for transplantation are patients with a matched sibling donor. The preparation consists of cytoreduction, chemotherapy, and total body irradiation in an attempt to eradicate the underlying disease. Chemotherapy is also given at certain times after donor marrow infusion in an attempt to ameliorate or prevent graft-versus-host disease. The nurse dealing with this type of patient must have the ability to assess each patient during each phase of treatment. Careful assessment of physical condition during the period of bone marrow suppression is necessary to deal with or prevent major complications. Emotional support of the patient and family is an ongoing process throughout the period of hospitalization and outpatient observation.
