First Steps in Governing Education

Abstract

abstract abstract It is argued that education, like other non‐technical enterprises, depends for its success on a firm grasp of the concepts and values that constitute it: hence that government must ensure such a grasp on the part of teachers and other practitioners as a necessary qualification for all educators. The central concepts and values are listed, and the ways in which these are apt to be lost or distorted by liberals and authoritarians are discussed, together with some suggestions about how government can help to reintroduce them.
