This is a splendid book which adds a new dimension to reference books on liver disease.The volume includes an extensive section on normal liver physiology and biochemistry, including comprehensive chapters on carbohydrate metabolism, plasma lipoproteins, protein metabolism, and the liver and nutritional aspects of liver disease.In contrast to other texts in the field, this section by itself provides up to date, thorough reviews on normal liver physiology which will serve as a welcome reference source for hepatologists, teachers, and researchers.The second part of the book contains a review of diagnostic methods.It provides more complete coverage of topics such as isotopic scanning, echography, and hepatobiliary radiology than can be found in any currently published text on liver disease.The remainder and largest section of the book discusses individual hepatic disorders.This section is similar in content and quality to Schiff's Diseases of the Liver, edition IV, but is more current.The 58 chapters are written by 75 authors, all expert in, or very familiar with, their subjects.The book encompasses the entire spectrum of liver disease.The chapters are well written and well illustrated.The bibliographies following each chapter vary in length, reflecting the new knowledge in the field.For example, there are 11 references following the chapter on normal anatomy and 422 references following the chapter on viral hepatitis.Most chapters are well referenced.This is an excellent book written by experts for experts.It is factual, relatively free of undocumented opinion and well worth Ibe money.
