Abstract
The forms of the family vary greatly between different societies. In the following extracts, three different variations are described. First the traditional family system of Japan, one which has undergone changes but still remains an important element of modern Japan; second the family among the Wodaabe Fulani, a cattle-herding people in northern Nigeria; and finally the contemporary British family.
