Abstract

Animal wildlife food samples from the Sahtú (Hareskin) Dene/Metis people of Fort Good Hope and Colville Lake, Northwest Territories, Canada, were analyzed for retinal contents. Values for 39 of the 56 foods are reported for the first time; values ranged from 0.0 to 32,000 RE/100 g, with only 11 foods containing >20 RE/100 g of retinol. A trend towards higher absolute levels of 13-cis retinol and of higher ratios of 13-cis retinol:all-trans retinol was seen in animal and fowl tissues in contrast to fish. All-trans dehydroretinol was found only in fish.
