Abstract

The recent IOM committee report on Resident Duty Hours, while suggesting further restructuring of work hours, seems to recognize that different specialties may have different needs. If this is what is intended and represents an affirmation that “one size does not fit all” then this recognition is most welcome. The surgical disciplines are different, inasmuch as surgical training requires unique curricula and time frames which differ fundamentally from medical disciplines.
