Abstract
Automobiles have various environmental impacts. Their life cycle includes raw materials production, assembly, use and maintenance, and final disposal. The impacts of the construction and maintenance of road infrastructure also have to be considered. As an example of the quantitative analysis of life cycle environmental impacts, CO2 emissions from the production and use of automobiles can be estimated using the summing-up approach and the input-output analysis approach. This article also reviews recent topics related to automobile production and use in Japan including the development of electrically powered automobiles and automobile bodies with a high aluminium content.
