Abstract
Phenomenological analysis pays special attention to the structure of immediate lived experience, and seeks to describe such experience in everyday language. This study develops further the general implications of the phenomenological approach to musical experience initiated in the author's previous articles.' The present study deals with the application of the phenomenological method to a specific experimental problem-the affective response to music. To explicate this experience, concrete examples of musical behavior were obtained experimentally through the phenomenal reports of selected subjects. The components of these descriptions were then studied to discover their accidental or essential character, and the synthetic results embodied in a definition.
