Abstract
A NUMBER of problems in the philosophy of mind, ethics, and aesthetics centre on the expression of emotion, particularly in relation to other manifestations of emotion, expressions of intention and opinion, and statements about emotion. Various theories have been put forward to explain the expression of emotion, but there are serious difficulties with them. This essay is an attempt to develop a theory which, unlike other theories that have been advanced, will account for the expression of emotion in such a way as to shed some light on these problems.
