Abstract
Two cross-sectional surveys of diabetes mellitus using a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) conducted in the town of Hisayama showed that the prevalence of diabetes and other glucose intolerance statuses steeply increased during a 14-year period. In a prospective study of Hisayama residents, who underwent the OGTT at baseline, the risks for the development of ischemic stroke in both sexes and coronary heart disease in women were significantly higher in subjects with diabetes than in those with normal glucose tolerance even after adjustment for other confounding factors, but such association was not seen for coronary heart disease in men. Additionally, we observed a synergistic effect between diabetes and metabolic syndrome for the development of ischemic stroke and coronary heart disease.
