What is Community Well-Being?

Abstract

This videotaped interview on the topic of 'What is Community Well-Being' was conducted on May 4, 2009 in Miami, Florida at the School of Education, University of Miami. Dean Isaac Prilleltensky presents the concept of community well-being as consisting of two major cateogories: objective and subjective indicators. Objective indicators measure such things as the level of child abuse, access to health care, the number of homeless, number of parks and green space. Subject indicators measure the sense of community and the available social capital. Subjective indicators and look at such phenomena as the level of volunteerism, the leadership of churches in developing community cohesion, and if the members of the community feel supported by their neighbors. Subjective factors also include the sense of individual well-being, the quality of organizations (e.g. efficient government serivces) and the soundness of policies (e.g. accessible health care) supporting the well-being of the community.
