Probabilistic expectation and rationality in classical probability theory

Abstract

Throughout the 18th century, the notion of probabilistic expectation was a matter of controversy among mathematicians. Despite its seminal role in the earliest formulations of mathematical probability, such as that of Huygens, expectation did not remain a fixed concept but underwent several striking shifts in definition. This paper argues that the conception of expectation was altered by mathematicians in a deliberate effort to capture the salient aspects of rational decision making. As the notion of rationality successively took on legal, economic, and then psychological overtones, the definition of probabilistic expectation followed suit. Tout au long du 18ième siècle, la notion d'espérance mathématique a été un sujet de controverse parmi les mathématiciens. Malgré son importance créatrice dans les premières formulations d'une théorie des probabilités, telle que celle de Huygens, le concept d'espérance ne demeura pas stagnant, sa définition subit de nombreux changements remarquables. Dans le présent article, nous tentons de montrer que les mathématiciens modifièrent délibérément le concept d'espérance en vue d'isoler les points saillants d'un processus rationel de prise de décision. De même que la notion de rationalité prit successivement une teinte légale, économique puis psychologique, de même en a-t-il été ainsi de la définition d'espérance mathématique. Das ganze 18. Jahrhundert hindurch herrschten kontroverse Auffassungen bei den Mathematikern über den Erwartungsbegriff in der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung. Trotz der fruchtbaren Rolle, die der Erwartungsbegriff in den frühesten Formulierungen der mathematischen Wahrscheinlichkeit wie z.B. derjenigen von Huygens spielte, wurde er nicht unverändert beibehalten, sondern erfuhr mehrere entscheidende Definitionsveränderungen. In dieser Abhandlung wird ausgeführt, dass der Begriff der Erwartung von den Mathematikern umdefiniert wurde im bewussten Streben danach, die wesentlichen Aspekte rationaler Entscheidungen einzybeziehen. Die Definition des Erwartungswertes der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung folgte der allgemeinen Entwicklung, in der der Rationalitätsbegriff der Reihe nach legalistische, okonomische und schliesslich psychologische Züge erkennen liess.
