Abstract

Since the involvement of papillomaviruses in the pathogenesis of human tumors was recognized, a great number of different virus isolates have been collected from a variety of lesions. Especially, the observation of a correlation between the development of malignant cervical cancer and the presence of certain types of human papillomavirus (H PV) has spurred an extensive search for possible new types of these viruses (for a review see zur Hausen 1991).
