Abstract
With this paper I aim to demonstrate that a look beyond the Aristotelian square of opposition, and a related non-conservative view on logical determiners, contributes to both the understanding of Aristotelian syllogistics as well as to the study of quantificational structures in natural language.

Natural Language SemanticsA theory of focus interpretation
3,180 Citations1992Mats Rooth
A range of semantic and pragmatic applications of the theory are examined, and a unitary principle specifying how the focus semantic value interacts with semantics and pragmatic processes is extracted.
LanguageThe representation of (in)definiteness . Edited by Eric J. Reuland and Alice G. B. ter Meulen (Current Studies in Linguistics Series, 14.) Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1987. Pp. 344.
967 Citations1989Jack Hoeksema
The authors of these 11 original essays were charged by the editors to take more than usual heed of alternative analyses offered by other theories, thereby promoting cross-fertilization of syntactic and semantic ideas, concepts, and argumentation.

Quantifiers in Language and Logic
398 Citations2008Stanley Peters, Dag Westerståhl
This paper presents the results of a large-scale comparison study of the effects of language translation and quantification on pressurization in the context of natural language processing.
Oxford University Press eBooksAbstract Objects and the Semantics of Natural Language
261 Citations2013Friederike Moltmann
This book pursues the question of how and whether natural language allows for reference to abstract objects in a fully systematic way and argues for an ontological picture that is very different from that generally taken for granted by philosophers and semanticists alike.

212 Citations2012Edward L. Keenan
The landscape of Quantificational expressions in Greek by Anastasiya Giannakidou and Hungary by Aniko Csirmaz and Anna Szabolcsi is illustrated.

Linguistics and PhilosophyOptimality Theoretic Semantics
174 Citations2001Petra Hendriks, Helen de Hoop
The basic hypothesis is that natural language interpretation can be characterized as an optimization problem and this innovative view on interpretation is shown to account for the crucial role of contextual information while avoiding certain well-known problems associated with compositionality.

101 Citations1993Manfred Krifka
This paper will show how structured meanings can be combined with a framework of dynamic interpretation that allows for a cogent expression of anaphoric relations and presuppositions.

95 Citations1996Edward L. Keenan
Results of the study of generalized quantifiers and semantic generalizations of natural language determiners are overviewed.
Journal of SemanticsConservativity and Learnability of Determiners
39 Citations2012Tim B. Hunter, Jeffrey Lidz
Experimental evidence is presented that 4- and 5-year-olds fail to learn a novel non-conservative determiner but succeed in learning a comparable conservative determiner, consistent with the learnability hypothesis.
Studies in linguistics and philosophyThere-Sentences and Generalized Quantifiers
37 Citations1987Lars G. Johnsen
An analysis of the so called definiteness effect in connection with existential there sentences (ETSs) is presented and an answer to why it is definite noun phrases that typically are discourse anaphors, and not the indefinites is proposed.

The view that no such incompatibilities exist is supported, that the authors witness two ways of approaching the same phenomenon, and that the findings in one perspective may contribute to those obtained in the other.
