Morphological taxonomy. Rankin, J. M. Abstract An investigation is conducted of the morphological characteristics of polarized pulsar emission profiles, giving particular attention to aspects of formal evolution with radio frequency. It is found that there exist two distinct physical types of pulsar emission and two corresponding prototypical species of profile component, quasi-axial or 'core' emission and the more familiar conal emission. A study concerning the spectral behavior of component width is discussed, taking into account width measurements, conal single profiles, core components, barely resolved double profiles, and well-resolved double profiles. It is concluded that the 'absorption features' first identified by Bartel (1981) in 0809+74 are found in every well identified conal-single profile or core component studied.
