Abstract

Profession and professionalism are increasingly being applied to work and workers in modern societies yet the conditions of trust, discretion and competence, which historically have been deemed to be necessary for professional practice, are continually being challenged, changed or ‘regulated’. This represents a contemporary paradox that is important to clarify and understand.
