Abstract

In the early days of research on chronic illness the availability of appropriate services was the cornerstone. In the second period the content and experiences of those services have dominated research discussion. In the present and for the foreseeable future both these issues will be researched in a more complex and volatile atmosphere, both in the context of the reforms and restructuring that are occurring, and in the much more negotiated and sometimes conflicting relationships between those who provide and receive services, and within the services themselves.
