This chapter will provide an overview of sustainability in respect of building refurbishments, including: • Overview of sustainable development and the key themes that are discussed under its umbrella; • Review of cross-cutting areas of climate change affecting building requirements; • Use of the 14 themes of sustainability to define the typical areas of sustainable refurbishment; • Sustainable development is a constantly changing area comprising a number of key themes; • Sustainable refurbishment is developing as an area, but there are relatively few modern examples.
