Abstract
A conceptualization of an anatomy of continuing medical education (CME), resulting from a study by a task force of the Society of Medical College Directors of Continuing Medical Education, is presented. A corpus of three systems and 14 parts is described and attention is called to their interrelationships and the possibilities for further study leading to the development of a body of knowledge, that is, a science or discipline, for CME. It is suggested that a body of knowledge developed for CME may be useful with suitable modifications in the continuing education of health professionals other than physicians.
