Abstract

This chapter describes and assesses the cultural and environmental impacts of foreign amenity migrants in a peripheral mountainous protected zone in the context of the rapidly expanding Metropolitan Area of San José, the capital of Costa Rica. Land use, local culture and economics are under severe pressure to change. The chapter focuses on these dynamics in the rural hillside community of San Antonio de Escazú. The perceptions of key stakeholders are also examined.
