Abstract

Abstract The natural sciences have assumed a position of unparalleled authority in twentieth-century Western intellectual life. But what kind of knowledge do the sciences provide us and what is the basis of their cognitive authority? These questions have grown more pressing as feminist and environmental movements have implicated scientific research and science-based technologies in the continuing subordination of women and in the degradation of the environment.
