Abstract
To accommodate upward revisions of the magnitude of carbon dioxide emissions due to deforestation, new sinks have to be postulated to balance the global carbon budget. Carbon fixation by the remaining intact biosphere may be more responsive to stimulation by increasing atmospheric concentration than was previously assumed. The response of plant growth to carbon dioxide concentrations under conditions of water-limited growth and light-limited growth is discussed. CO/sup 2/ caused a greater improvement in water use efficiency when water availability was most limited. Results also indicated a positive response of plant growth to CO/sup 2/ enrichment under low light conditions. (9 references, 2 tables)
