Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses age-related changes in physiological and psychological functions that are relevant to the design of computers and computer work places. There is a substantive body of knowledge that suggests that there are age-related decrements in abilities such as visual information processing, memory, and learning. However, only a limited amount of research has been conducted that has assessed the relevance of these changes to real-world tasks. More research is needed to determine the extent to which age affects the performance of computer interactive tasks. Also, the data indicates that observed age differences are modifiable through changes in system design and the provision of adequate training. For example, larger characters, maximized character resolution, highlighting critical screen information, providing for slower processing rates, and minimizing design inconsistencies should facilitate the performance of persons. Designing for an older population would increase the employment opportunities for the elderly and also enhance the functional independence of this population. Accommodating for the needs of the elderly in the design process facilitates the performance of all user groups.
