Abstract
GENETIC studies of ribosomes in prokaryotes such as Escherichia coli have been facilitated by the use of mutants resistant to antibiotics; mutations which affect either subunit of the ribosome are known1. In eukaryotes, genetic information on the translation apparatus has come mainly from studies of temperature-sensitive mutants2,10, and also cycloheximide resistance, which is known to be a property of the 60S subunit3. Recent studies with resistance to the alkaloid cryptopleurine have shown that Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains resistant to this compound have altered ribosomes4.
