Abstract

A cohort of 910 Spanish travelers to tropical and subtropical areas were interviewed at Barcelona Airport with a questionnaire designed to evaluate the health information received prior to their trip as well as questions concerning malaria prophylaxis. The objectives of the study were: The study was carried out during the summer of 1987 by contacting the tour operators located at the airport 3 days a week.Travelers completed their interview forms before embarking. Only 15 persons refused the interview. A total of 894 travelers were contacted by telephone during the first trimester after returning home to assess use of prophylaxis after travel.
