Abstract
This national study aimed to: \n1. identify the role and function of the rural nurse in a hospital setting in Australia; \n2. collect data to provide a base-line for the development of competencies for rural registered nurses in different size health service locations; and \n3. identify areas of priority for continuing and award education and training for rural nurses in different practice settings.
