Abstract
In the absence of direct information on the one million people who enter nursing homes each year, we derived a representative national admissions cohort with data from the 1977 National Nursing Home Survey. We found that high proportions of admissions have short lengths of stay and are discharged within the same calendar year. As a result, we estimated that admissions in a given year contribute 22% to the total days of nursing home care used during that year. Policy implications of data on nursing home admissions are discussed.
