The development of instruments for assessing attitudes and knowledge about cardiovascular nutrition among adult lay persons based on the Nutrition Recommendations for Canadians and an independent panel of experts determined content validity.

Abstract

This paper describes the development of instruments for assessing attitudes and knowledge about cardiovascular nutrition among adult lay persons. Based on the Nutrition Recommendations for Canadians, we prepared 26 attitude and 31 knowledge items consistent with conventional test construction criteria. An independent panel of experts determined content validity. We assessed construct validity by measuring significant differences in the mean attitude and knowledge scores among groups presumed to have differing information regarding cardiovascular nutrition. Internal consistency procedures measured reliability. Item-analysis procedures revealed a few weak items which we revised or deleted from the final instrument consisting of 19 attitude statements in 2 subtests and 27 knowledge statements in 3 subtests.
