Abstract
Nursing students often perceive a lack of clinical experience in their academic nursing programs. They may feel inadequately prepared, and therefore insecure, when they enter the world of work. The facuity of the University of Connecticut School of Nursing proposed to solve this problem by designing a work-study clinical course as an elective summer program. Their goal was to allow students to experience the day-today realities of professional nursing. In this article the authors discuss the design, implementation, and evaluation of their program, and they report the reactions of faculty, nursing staff, and students to the experience.
