TL;DR

Two functional measures, the phase residual and the Fourier ring correlation, are discussed in that context and their applications in image analysis and three-dimensional reconstruction are discussed.

Abstract

A recurring problem in image analysis and three-dimensional reconstruction is how best to compare two independent images. Commonly used measures such as the cross-correlation coefficient are insufficient indicators of image similarity. In this paper two functional measures, the phase residual and the Fourier ring correlation, are discussed in that context.
