Abstract

All social activity is situated in time and space. As a number of writers have recently suggested,1 this means not simply that all human activity occurs in particular places at particular times — an assertion described by Giddens as 'banal and uninstructive'2 — but that where and when such activity occurs is important in explaining and understanding it.
