Abstract

Current models of imagery emphasise the process of imaging and give little consideration to the function images might serve. Thus, many imagery effects, such as the beneficial effects of imaging upon remembering, are not addressed by these models. This paper proposes a functional approach to imagery in which images facilitate the retrieval of information from memories of complex events. Implications of this approach for current models of imagery are considered.
