Abstract
This chapter presents more recent literature concerning effects of inadequate drainage on crop growth and yields. It discusses the primary mechanisms relating crop response to excessive soil water. The chapter focuses on response functions and models that aid in estimating the effects of water management on crop growth and yield. It also presents recent developments related to flooding tolerance in plants. Various measures of the response of crops to excess water stress are found in the literature. Frequently cited responses include reduced seed germination; root function, growth and development; shoot growth and development; and crop yield and quality. Many crop models have been developed to simulate physiologically based crop growth, development, and yield. Crop yield focuses around three important areas-growth rate, growth duration, and the extent to which stresses influence the two. The chapter discusses simplified approaches used to predict crop yields under high water table conditions.
