Abstract
The effect of a cubic crystal field Hamiltonian containing both fourth and sixth degree terms and acting on an angular momentumJ, has been investigated as a function of the ratio between the fourth and sixth degree terms. Tables of eigenvectors and diagrams of eigenvalues, expressed as a function of a mixing parameter, are given for all J-manifolds between 2 and 8 in half-integral steps. The application of the results to the magnetic properties of rare earth ions in cubic environments is discussed.
