Abstract
The permanence of retrograde amnesia produced for a single training trial by a single electroconvulsive shock was studied. No recovery from amnesia was found with either single or repeated retention tests. Amnesic effects were found to be permanent with retention intervals as long as 1 month.

1,456 Citations1966James L. McGaugh
The findings indicate that the long-lasting trace of an experience is not completely fixed, consolidated, or coded at the time of the experience, and that any search for the engram or the basis of memory is not going to be successful.
ScienceRecovery of Memory after Amnesia Induced by Electroconvulsive Shock
113 Citations1967Sheila Zinkin, A. J. Miller
Electroconvulsive shock given to rats immediately after one-trial avoidance learning produced a significant amnesic effect 24 hours later; this amnesia had largely disappeared in further retention tests 48 and 72 hours after treatment.
Psychological ReportsSingle Trial Conditioning: Methodology and Results with Mice
67 Citations1964Walter B. Essman, Herbert P. Alpern
Four experiments are presented with data from three methods for establishing a conditioned avoidance response in mice in a single trial, and approximately 90% of the mice used with these methods showed conditioning.
Psychonomic ScienceSuppression and recovery of a one-trial avoidance response after a single ECS
33 Citations1964R. M. Cooper, Richard Koppenaal
Groups of rats were subjected to either a single ECS or no ECS within a few sec. after receiving 1 or 2 punishing shocks in a box in which they had been trained to drink from a water spout.
