TL;DR
Day care has beneficial effect on children's development, school success and adult life patterns, and there are positive effects on mothers' education, employment and interaction with children.
Abstract
Day care has beneficial effect on children's development, school success and adult life patterns. To date, all randomised trials have been conducted among disadvantaged populations in the USA. The extent to which the results are generaliseable to other cultures and socioeconomic groups has yet to be evaluated.

At corrected age 36 months, the intervention group had significantly higher mean IQ scores than the follow-up group, and significantly fewer maternally reported behavior problems, and a small, but statistically significant, increase in maternALLY reported minor illnesses for the lighter-birth-weight group only, with no difference in serious health conditions.

Analysis of data obtained during Strange Situation assessments conducted when infants were 12 and 13 months of age revealed that infants exposed to 20 or more hours of care per week displayed more avoidance of mother on reunion and were more likely to be classified as insecurely attached to her than infants with less than 20 hours of Care per week.
