Cigarette Smoking and Facial Wrinkling

Cigarette smoking is an independent risk factor for the development of facial wrinkles, although the mechanism is unclear, according to Kadunce and colleagues.

As noted by the authors, only a subgroup of subjects (27.5%) with a smoking history of more than 50 pack-years were severely wrinkled, a relation similar to that between smoking and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, in which only 26% of heavy smokers developed airway obstruction.
