Abstract
At first, intensive-care units were used in cases of poliomyelitis affecting respiratory mechanism; and anæsthetists played an important part in the management of such cases. But, as the scope of intensive care became more widely extended, a multitude of disciplines were needed. Administratively, intensive-care units are best concentrated as six to ten beds at strategic sites within regions rather than as smaller units in every hospital. Administrative responsibility should rest in the hands of a doctor who should not have a vested interest in bed allocation.
