Abstract
Many women referred for premenstrual complaints have more generalized psychiatric disorders. In order to determine whether a patient has premenstrual syndrome alone or a mood disorder, the authors developed a program for evaluation comprising a diary kept by the patient of daily symptoms and unusual events, psychiatric interviews, physical and gynecologic examinations, and assessment with a rating scale specific for premenstrual symptoms. The authors present evidence for a relationship between premenstrual syndrome and affective disorders, describe their recommendations for clinical management, and discuss areas for future research.
