Abstract
Ten recent empirical studies of the body are reviewed with particular reference to illness. Discussion is organized around the relations of body to world, body to self, social mediations of embodiment and physical reshapings of the body. Particular attention is given to recent work of Kathy Davis on elective cosmetic surgery, Emily Martin on the immune system, Kay Toombs on the phenomenology of chronic illness, and Iris Marion Young on women's embodiment.
